Dear Mr. Epstein,

Thank you for your kind letter. I believe Celi always had a warm spot in
his heart for Israel - and vis-a-versa. I find it ludicrous that anyone
could even think that Celi had any sympathy for the Nazis. Note what Celi
said regarding his own detractors:

Q. So you have had confirmation that your conduct, your ideas were right?

A. As far as I am concerned, there is no lack of confirmation, but there
are some people who still have doubts about Celibidache, and about what he
has done. For many, I am mad, a dictator, a megalomaniac, a show-off..

Q. And what do you answer to that?

A. I do not answer. I do not feel alluded to by this shortsightedness. I
can't even say that I expect someone, at any stage, to be inspired enough
to see the light. No. Those who live by my side have every chance of
understanding that. That is why I have been teaching since I was thirty.
